Wish you were here
“Wish you were here”, are words found on post card, sent home from holidays. This is how I and a staff member felt on our visit to the Serenity Café in Carnforth. Housed in the Free Methodist Church Hall. On entering the hall you feel welcome. The manager Jayne Collin is a bright cheerful lady who brings a bright ray of sunshine to the place.
I had the Pleasure of doing a brief interview with Jayne. I found her willing to talk to me and very informative. In answer to my first question she relayed this information. Dr Knox at Ashtree Surgery, spearheaded the Better Care Together initiative and hopes to make Carnforth the healthiest place to live. Jayne wanted to volunteer her time to help people with their mental health needs.
The Café opened in March 2016 and opens every Wednesday 1-3pm. People have come with stress & anxiety issue and over the weeks have grown in confidence. This also helps Jayne with her own Bi-polar.
At the present time they are between 8 and 12 attendees at the cafe. Jayne is looking to boost attendance. I asked Jayne where she thought the café might go in the future, she shared her vision to create more Serenity cafes, in Lancaster & Morecambe, to give people who are isolated a place to go and chat, including coffee/tea, cake and the offer of peer support.
Finally, if you are in Carnforth then please pay a visit to the serenity café to help this project develop. Come down and talk to Jayne, find out more about this warm and welcoming place of support. Location and contact details are below. Thank you so much.
